Upcoming elections

Every Indian legislature has a five-year term, and an election must be completed before it expires. That deadline is knowable years in advance; the schedule is not. What follows is the deadline.

Legislatures tracked
32
the Lok Sabha and 31 assemblies
Due within a year

term expires in the next 12 months
Term already expired

polled since, or awaiting a poll

These are due-by dates, not announced schedules. The Election Commission publishes a date only weeks before a poll, and this site does not track its announcements. A house dissolved early votes sooner — Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim all went early in 2024 to poll alongside the general election — and one under President’s rule can wait longer.

The clock runs from an assembly’s first sitting, which falls days to weeks after the count, so these dates are given to the month rather than the day. Seat counts are elective seats only: the nominated members some assemblies have are excluded, as they are not elected. Rows marked “not in this dataset” were polled after the bulk source behind this site was published in June 2023 — the date is hand-entered so the term clock stays right, and the result will appear here when the source is next updated. See methodology for what that source covers.
